More info...
By Paul zayer

Many families with children think about getting pets, but when they try to figure out which type of pet would be safe and fun for children in play, they may keep putting the idea on hold. This true story might help you decide which pet to get.

In my childhood, The pet beloved by all in the neighbourhood was Ben the chocolate Labrador. Ben had a good nature, really loved children and provided hours of fun and entertainment with his love of water, usually in the form of sprinklers and a bunch of kids. Ben came from a long line of water loving dogs, rejoicing in a lake where he could practice his swimming and diving abilities. Ben's ancestry bred an instinct of compassion and protectiveness towards people. Ben was so smart and sensitive.

We saw this blind lady who lived down the street and tried to make her way to the mailbox with her cane and Ben always seemed to know when she was going. In all his chocolate Labrador beauty, he would stay by her side, tail fluffy and friendly, guiding her along her way. Ben was the angel of chocolate Labradors. Even the color of his coat was comforting and lovable.

You may not know that the Labrador is the most popular family pet in the United States. They have tender dispositions, can be trained easily, of a docile personality, loving and friendly, with an intelligent and companionable character. These dogs learn quickly and respond enthusiastically to praise for their good deeds. Perhaps because of my own memories, the chocolate Labrador is so especially appealing, with all these great characteristics. They are not necessarily guard dogs but watchdogs. When a stranger approaches, they will let you know, but these are not attack dogs.

There is that soft spot in the heart for the chocolate Labrador, that just doesn't go away. There always was a matter of controversy as the color of the chocolate Labradors in the world of dog shows. The chocolate Labrador must be pure in the chocolate coloring to attain "show" quality, without brindling or tan spots, of the pure chocolate Labrador shade. In the assessment of a good family pet, it seems a bit silly to be literally "splitting hairs.
Look in to the Labrador if you're debating which animal might make a good companion for your family. You might find another Ben, who knows?, the chocolate Labrador who makes the ideal addition to your family?

The Most Common Cat Diseases
By David Hensley

Cats get ill even if they are taken care of very well. The cat diseases range from kitty cold to fatal diseases. Some of the most common cat diseases are discussed under:

Upper respiratory infection is very common among the cats and is also known as kitty cold by their owners. The symptoms are very similar to the cold of the humans, accompanied by sneezing and running nose. Even though it seems to be alike, the infections caused in the cats are very different as one species get infected by the other species. But, it can be contagious among the cats. The upper respiratory tract infection can lead to loss of appetite and can affect them from days to weeks. The cats must be made to eat, which can be encouraged by warming their foods and applying a warm, moist cloth to keep the cats nose and eyes free from any kind of discharge. If the loss of appetite persists and if the discharge becomes yellowish green in color and thicker, they have to be taken to the veterinarian immediately as it will be a serious problem.

Feline Chlamydia is a kind of bacteria which affects the cats, usually infesting the eye, causing conjunctivitis. The symptoms of feline Chlamydia are anorexia, cough, breathing problem, pneumonia, fever, sneezing, running nose, watery eyes etc. It is best treated with the help of antibiotics. This is also one of the common cat diseases.

Panleukopenia is a cat disease that makes the cats white blood cell count to drop drastically. As white blood cells are very important for the cats immunity, this condition makes the cats susceptible to many deadly infections. This virus is transmitted through body secretions, mainly via feces and can be carried by water or shoes.

Feline leukemia virus can cause many cat diseases. One among them is leukemia otherwise known as the cancer of the white blood cells. There is no known treatment for this disease and might lead to death after months or years after the incidence of this disease. It is usually transmitted during cat fights. Other reasons for transmission may be through foods shared among them, through water bowls, from mother to the kittens in the womb etc.

Parasites are organisms which feed on other living being for their own survival. Cats are affected by parasites, which feed on their blood. External parasites such as ear mites, fleas etc can be seen on the skin or fur of the cats and in their ears. Internal parasites detection may be bit difficult, but can be known through sighting small rice like debris lingering to the cats anus or in the cats bedding. Some of the internal parasites are ring worms, hook worms, tape worms etc.

Coccidia is a microscopic parasite which lives in the lining cells of the intestines. The symptom associated with this parasite is diarrhea which if left untreated, can lead to dehydration and even death. Ear mites usually take up residence in the cats ear canals causing severe itching.

Pet Obesity - A Growing Concern
By David Hensley

Obesity in pets is common nowadays causing real problems. The obesity in pets is due to either over feeding or not providing any exercise to the pets or not providing the right diet. Obesity in pets is also attributed to the modern lifestyles of people, who leave their pets alone in their house, eating for themselves whatever they want and not providing any exercise. Obesity conditions of pets can lead to devastating state of their health like high blood pressure, skin problems, increased risk to diabetes mellitus and heat intolerance resulting in pets facing high risks of heat strokes during hot weathers, risk towards infections and towards anesthesia.

Obesity in cats:

Nearly 25 percent of cats are known to be clinically obese, meaning excess fat accumulation of the body. Not having a check on the cats obesity may lead them to the reduction of the cats life span. Obese cats are prone to heart diseases, arthritis, skin disorders, fatty liver disease, lower urinary tract diseases, diabetes and cancer. Obesity can lead to or can be a cause for diabetes.

The main reasons for obesity in cats:

Obesity in cats may be due to aging process or due to the breed, or due to genetics which can cause increase in body weight. Mixed breed cats suffer from obesity than pure breeds.

Neutering female and male cats bodily functions gets reduced up to 25 percent leading them into obesity. By eating extra calories too, they become obese. Low thyroid hormonal levels also cause obesity.

Obesity in dogs:

The incidence obesity is more when the dogs are owned by an obese person than the dogs owned by a physically fit person. The dog breeds, which are more prone to obesity, are small terriers, cocker spaniels, dachshunds, beagles etc. This does not mean that other dog breeds are not prone to obesity. Any dog, which is lethargic and lies down all the day, is obese. It has been found that around one third of people do not know that their dogs are obese.

The reasons for obesity in dogs:

When dogs are fed on table scraps they become obese as the food cannot be monitored for quality. The food with a good nutritional balance and value has to be provided for their well being rather than feeding scraps of food.

Spayed female dogs are more prone to obesity. Likewise castrated male dogs too are prone to obesity. A dog may be obese due to under active thyroid hormones making it overweight and sluggish. Also when dogs are not provided regular walks and exercise they tend to become obese.

Ways to overcome obesity in pets:

The pets should be provided with good nutritional food with rich protein content and make the weight loss procedure to take its toll gradually. They have to be supplemented with amino acids, vitamins and minerals for regaining their stamina.

Time should be spent with the pets to make them run, jump and do mild exercises to keep them fit. The valuable time spent with the pet can be very relaxing to both the pet and the owner.
